SCREAMING AT THE GHOSTBUSTERS!

Howdy there, Scream Freaks! So, the new Ghostbusters movie has all but broken the internet with its record-smashing backlash of negative feedback from fans around the world, but we think we may be able to top that controversy with another noteworthy debate of biblical proportions! Does the Ghostbusters franchise ultimately owe its success and legions of passionate fans to the original movies or its cartoon spin-off, The Real Ghostbusters?

The answer may seem quick and easy at first, but if you really think about it, what are the movies without the cartoon series? Sure, the first movie is one of the highest grossing comedies of all time, making cash cow superstars of most involved, but without the follow-up cartoon series, we don’t think it would have been anymore enduring and culturally relevant than Caddyshack or Stripes. Blasphemous you say?

Broadcasting 140 episodes over 7 seasons (plus a short-lived Slimer spin-off), The Real Ghostbusters was more than an animated hit riding on the coat tails of the ’84 film. It was a superior interpretation of the world and characters written by Dan Akroyd and Harold Ramis, creating a legacy that’s stuck with fans for 30 years and going. It was the cartoon series that made Winston an inseparable member of the team, Slimer a household name mascot, and launched countless consumer products in its image that became the definitive look of the Ghostbusters with its bright colors, nutty devices, and crazy ghosts and monsters. The cartoon was given its “real” title to stand apart and above the Filmation series Ghostbusters legally borrowed its name from, but we think it rightfully sets it apart from the movies as well, far exceeding its box-office success.

Of course, there may have never been a cartoon series without a hit movie behind it, begging the chicken or the egg argument, but we stand firm that while the movies created fans, its strong legacy is owed to the cartoon series that left lifelong impressions on so many growing up. What do you think?
